The Window on Russia in the Far East is the first cable car between two countries
Strelka KB and UNStudio designed the stations for the first cross-border cable car on the border between Russia and China
Strelka KB defined and established an economical and functional model for the stations on the first cross-border cable car, stretching across the border from Blagoveshchensk (Amur Region, Russia) to Heihe (Heilongjiang Province, China). In early 2019, based on the model they created, Strelka KB also conducted an international architectural competition to develop a design concept for the station, which awarded first prize to Dutch bureau UNStudio. The cable car project will be carried out by two chief investors, Region Group and Heihe Jinlonggang Construction and Development Co., with support from the Amur Regional Government. Construction on the cable car and its terminals is expected to start in 2020.
On 24 May 2019, an international agreement was signed regarding plans to create a Blagoveshchensk-Heihe cross-border agglomeration. The project is intended to have a positive influence on the entire urban agglomeration and open new horizons for international tourism and business. In addition, the terminal will serve as a “window on Russia” in the Far East and a symbol of the connection between the two countries. Thanks to the construction of the cable car, tourism from China should increase to 1million people per year. In addition to the Golden Mile alluvial territory and the bridge across the Amur River, the cable car will complete a tourism and recreational cluster. It will provide for comfortable and quick transportation between the cities and allow for the realisation of the territory’s economic potential.
The comprehensive model, based on investigations conducted by Strelka KB specialists, solves the primary task of creating a terminal that serves several purposes at once: transport, commercial, and representative. Strelka KB has become a platform that unites international specialists to create the first cross-border cable car in the world. Event programming will allow them to maintain the balance between the public interest and profitability. The selection of commercial tenants will be oriented on the demands of tourists and local residents.
Strelka KB conducted a closed international architectural competition, featuring 11 concepts by leading international and Russian architectural bureaus. The winner was Dutch bureau UNStudio, founded in 1988 and with experience in designing urban cablecar and terminals. The architects designed terminal with multiple levels in the form of steps, whose volume increases with height. From a distance, passengers will see a memorable facade that faces the city of Heihe.
The cable car will feature a capacity of 457 people per hour, which will allow up to 6,000-7,000 passengers to cross the cable car per day, totaling 1 million passengers per year. The cable car will work like a funicular, with cars leaving at least once every fifteen minutes.
