The initial draw of home automation was that it would save people time, and make their homes more relaxing. But as we grew more used to the technology which made up automation, it became more and more apparent that it could also be used to save money in various ways. Particularly when we moved into the realms of both smart technology and remote apps, saving money became one of the primary features that were advertised when it came to home automation. It brought convenience into many people’s homes, and convenience often brings the means to save money in different places. However, while home automation has been around and improving people’s lives for quite some time now, there are still people who are unfamiliar with just how much money they can save by using it.
Home automation which is suited to the house which it is installed in is something which can drastically lower the energy output of your home, whatever type of automation it might be. This works best if the home automation is directly suited to you and your home, but there are several systems which are good for saving money in general.
Thermostats were among the first things to be automated, and they have gone through several iterations since then. The original thermostats were made to be more accurate than the manual ones which they were to replace, making them more efficient. An automated thermostat is more responsive than other types of thermostat, and it responds to smaller changes than other thermostats. It can also respond to changes made to the temperature more swiftly, so that people find that their houses cool or heat more quickly than they did, thus saving them money.
The more modern thermostats now come with an app which can be loaded onto a phone or other mobile device, which is useful for a variety of reasons. With the original automated thermostats, people still needed to be in physical contact with their thermostats to change the temperature. The app allows them to be in different parts of the house, or even outside the house (more on that in the next section), and still affect the thermostat.
While automation now has the option to be slaved to a remote control device, there is also the option to have apps and programmes uploaded onto your mobile device of choice. If you have home automation which is able to connect to the internet, then you can directly affect it from outside the house. This is useful for saving money, as it means that making plans, or unexpected disasters, do not have to affect the home quite as much as they otherwise would.
The most obvious example of how remote control can save people money is the smart thermostat, which comes with an app which can specifically allow homeowners to make changes to their heating systems from remote locations. This can come in very handy when something unexpected comes up, such as you need to stay longer at work, or you have been invited for a night out. Rather than simply having to leave your heating on all night, you can simply switch it off, or have it come on at a later time. This will save you a lot of money in the long run, if you use it. Remote control lighting works on the same principles – if you forget to turn your lights off when you leave the house, you can use your mobile device to turn them off remotely, and save the money which would otherwise have been lost.
A lot of modern day smart homes now incorporate sensors in various ways; sensors to help the technology itself function, and sensors to help it connect to outside sources. Motion sensors in particular can be used to help you save money throughout your home, as they can be set up to carry out certain functions if they detect motion, or if they do not detect motion. You could set them up to turn lights off if they don’t detect any motion within a room or a house, which can save a lot of time and effort if you leave home and forget to turn the lights off.
One of the more recent inventions is linear motion systems which react to outside sources. The best example of this would be blinds which close automatically if they sense too much sunlight or heat getting into a room. This can save money for homeowners, as the rooms will not suffer the effects of overheating, and the systems of the house will not have to compensate for the changes in temperature.
DC actuators have been among the many things which have changed home automation into the energy-saving device that it is. This article is only the smallest idea of what can be done – there is so much more out there, but hopefully people will get a good idea of where to start from reading here.
