About SVNIT

This Institute was established in 1961 as one of the RECs for imparting technical education in Civil, Mechanical and Electrical Engineering. In the year 1983- 84 the Under Graduate programmes in Electronics Engineering was introduced and in the year 1988-89 the UG programmes in Computer Engineering and Production Engineering was started. In the year 1995-96, UG programme in Chemical Engineering was introduced. In exercise of the powers conferred by section 3 of the University Grants Commission (UGC) Act, 1956, the Central Government on the advice of the University Grants Commission, has declared the Sardar Vallabhbhai Regional College of Engineering & Technology (SVREC), Surat to Sardar Vallabhbhai National Institute of Technology (SVNIT), Surat with status of “Deemed University” with effect from 4th December 2002. The Institute has been granted the status of ‘Institute of National Importance’ w.e.f. Aug. 15, 2007. At present, the Institute is offering Six UG Programmes, Eighteen PG Programmes and Three M.Sc. Five Years Integrated Programme including doctoral programme in all above branches.

Civil Engineering Department

Planning course is kept under civil engineering department of SVNIT. The department is one of the pioneering departments, since the commencement of the college in 1961. Over the years, the department has progressed at a rapid pace with the development in both the spheres of infrastructure facilities and faculty members. The department has highly qualified faculty members engaged in teaching and research with the aim of achieving excellence in various fields. The faculty members are specialized in different disciplines of Civil Engineering.

Mission of the department

M 1: To provide excellent education producing technically competent, globally employable civil engineers who will be leaders in the chosen field.

M 2: To undertake research in conventional and advanced technologies fulfilling the needs and challenges of modern society.

M 3: To provide consultancy services and develop partnerships with society, industry and public organizations.

M 4: To organize seminar, conferences, symposia, and continuing education programmes for academic and field community.

Courses offered

The intent of this Programme is to educate the students in high level knowledge acceptable at global level enabling them to face field problems of urban and regional planning. The training reinforces them to pursue further academic achievements through research. This course is delivered using flexible teaching methods comprising studios, tutorials, theory and intensive field visits. The section is equipped with sufficient facilities for these purposes. To meet professional requirements, students are exposed to knowledge for practical perception of the techniques, applied in planning research. The area of decision-making is made stronger by the use of various software applications. Courses involved in curriculum are, Urban Planning Theory & Techniques, Urban Housing, Research Methodology, Sustainable Environmental planning, Innovation in urban infrastructure planning, Governance & management and Professional Project. The section has produced quality planners since 1987. The alumni students are functioning as consultants handling national and state problems. Many are absorbed in government sector also. The reflection of policy implementation can be visualized in sustainable development. However, some post-graduates of the institute opt to continue with doctoral studies. They focus on quality training in research. The section contributes sizable number of publications too. The post graduate section is vibrant in offering consultancy services also to various government agencies, through erudite faculty. The section is recognised by national professional body Institute of Town Planners of India (ITPI) and other planning schools.
